Nudiustertian

Nudiustertian.

What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed?

Michelangelo

Sweet, sane, still Nakedness in Nature! — ah if poor, sick, prurient humanity in cities might really know you once more! Is not nakedness then indecent? No, not inherently. It is your thought, your sophistication, your fear, your respectability that is indecent. There come moods when these clothes of ours are not only too irksome to wear, but are themselves indecent. Perhaps indeed he or she to whom the free exhilarating ecstasy of nakedness in Nature has never been eligible (and how many thousands there are!) has not really known what purity is — nor what faith or art or health really is.

Walt Whitman

Oh San Francisco.. They also had a nude bike race.  Enchanting.

Wait….. a ……. minute… it doesn’t mean that?  Come on now I know you thought it meant that as well.

Nudiustertian.   Adjective. nudiustertian (not comparable) (rare, obsolete, modern uses probably humorous) Of or relating to the day before yesterday; very recent.

Have you ever wished that you had a word for the day before yesterday? This is that word! It might be a little bit more convoluted to say, but it sure is an interesting sounding word. This word is sure to confuse, and eventually astound, people. Now that you know this word, try teaching it to your friends!

I like my definition better.

Word Break

I am about 63 words in to my only defining words year.. only words defined year.. a year of words definitions.. uh.. my annual word challenge?  Anyways.. Any way …

I am taking a one day break to present to you my second challenge.  Actually it wasn’t really a challenge, it was a necessity for me.  2020 was a tough year.

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Right when I started to feel more than slightly over-whelmed…. when I hit the wall of, “I just can’t do this any more.” My best friend from high school started this song exchange with me.

“Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can’t.”
― Johnny Depp

I’m honestly not sure if it was an intentional “I want to start passing songs back and forth through eternity.” Or if it just started as an idea and bloomed into what I now consider a necessity to start each day.  All I know is we have reached the magical number of 500. (I’m not sure that is legally a magic number or just something I made up.)

“Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!”
― J.K. Rowling

I’m not talking 500 songs total.  I’m saying, on my end, I have sent her 500 songs.  This means that she has likely sent me at least 500 songs.  Out of 1000+ songs exchanged.  We only have a couple of repeats.

“He took his pain and turned it into something beautiful. Into something that people connect to. And that’s what good music does. It speaks to you. It changes you.”
― Hannah Harrington

What this really means is that even though it was to be a daily one song exchange, there were obviously days we became carried away with the song, the follow song, and the song that might have led to five other songs.   It also means that this was not what you would call a one hit wonder and move along jack.  It was something we started that became a something we do thing.  Sometimes we talk about the songs we have sent and sometimes I will wake up to just one song to which I will reply with one song and that is enough. It gets me going every single day.

“Music is the soundtrack of our lives.”  ~Dick Clark

The songs chosen range from songs that inspired us in youth, to new songs that we had no idea existed until we received or gave that song away.  The songs have made me laugh, cry, and wonder .. deeply wonder.. about the talented folks who have been the sound track to my life.

“Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”
― Hunter S. Thompson

Some songs brought me back to specific times that only I know about while others caused me to stop what I was doing and just dance.. songs that were intrinsic to road trips I took with family.. high school dances.. couples roller-skating.. and even the deaths of my mom, my dad, and some very dear friends.

“Music is life! It’s physical emotion – you can touch it! It’s neon ecto-energy sucked out of spirits and switched into sound waves for your ears to swallow.” – Isaac Marion

“I love the way music inside a car makes you feel invisible; if you play the stereo at max volume, it’s almost like the other people can’t see into your vehicle. It tints your windows, somehow.”
― Chuck Klosterman

These songs listed below, are songs that carried me through a very difficult 2020 and into a slightly less difficult but still difficult 2021.  These songs reminded me that despite everything, I still have music.  These songs have assured me that no matter how many songs I have heard, or will here, there will be a thousand more, a million more, songs into infinity, that will carry me through the next difficulty.

Pick a song.. share a song.. sing a song.  You might be .. you will be amazed at how it will transport you from whatever you are doing to whatever you need to be doing.  Or it will stop you from doing what you shouldn’t be doing.. or cause you to forget what it was you were doing.  Just pick a song.  share a song.. sing a song.  Just because….Cuz it just makes you feel like a movie star, a dancer, a singer, or an out and out rock star!!!

“When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Let it be, let it be, …..

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, …..”

Snollygoster

Snollygoster. This is something many people already call many politicians, but it happens to be a nicer sounding term. This refers to a politician who does or says things for their own personal advancement instead of following their own principles. Try saying this in your next political discussion and see people’s reaction.

Interestingly enough, I only chose this word because it was Monday.  I was bored and it sounded like a fun word to start the week with.  I had no idea that it would be a word that I, and everyone around me, has been sadly and uncomfortably living with for about a half dozen years now.  Every day in the news, every conversation, every event, every up and every down …. we are surrounded by snollygosters.

I don’t actually have any other thing to add to this. Except it does not just apply to politicians, it applies to anyone who acts in such a way.  Even though i was disappointed with the actual meaning of the word, i still like how the world rolls of my tongue.

It reminded me of my favorite words from Dr. Suess.  Even some of the definitions of the Seuss words match up with snollygoster.

Gluppity-Glup:

Gluppity-glup and schloppity shlop were the particular breeds of nasty pollutants ruining the town’s ponds in Lorax, but the oh-so-onomatopoeic words could definitely have a more positive spin by describing that satisfied sound your bathtub drain makes when it’s slurped up all the water or the sloshing noise your boots make in a hard rain. Oh the places we’ll all go with this word!

Word of the Day is ‘snollygoster’ (19th century, US): one who abandons all integrity in favour of power.

Jogg-Oons:

The jogg-oons of Seuss’s mind are things which “doodle around in the far desert dunes … crooning very sad tunes,” but we could totally apply this to those early morning rise-and-runners who are out and at it before we’ve even hit the second snooze.

Lerkim:

In The Lorax, this is the name of the scary beachside shack which housed the Once-ler (also a fun ‘lil werdy-derd) and has since been replicated to astonishing accuracy. Since the place actually looked like it was physically lurking over the town, it was the perfect way to describe the home. But the phrase could also easily apply to your loitering labrador who’s staring you down for every bite at dinner. Total lerkim, that one. Or maybe it’s the hovering dad who’s staring you and your date down through the window as you say goodnight. LERKIM.

Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz:

Dr. Seuss’s ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! introduced this three-Z creature of the wood at the tail-end of his vocab adventure, but we think “zizzer-zazzer-zuzz” can definitely sub in as the new “thingamajig.”

Snollygoster (noun)

snol-igg-ost-ah

An unprincipled but shrewd person.

One, especially a politician, who is guided by personal advantage rather than by consistent, respectable principles.

If you have been wondering what word to use to describe that good-for-nothing person — a neighbor, a colleague, or a president — you are in luck. Things are going to get colorful this week, linguistically speaking. We present you with five vivid, offbeat, American words — what you do with them is up to you.         snollygoster

ETYMOLOGY:
Of uncertain origin, perhaps an alteration of snallygaster, a mythical creature said to prey on poultry and children, possibly from Pennsylvania Dutch schnelle geeschter, from German schnell (quick) + Geist (spirit). Earliest documented use: 1846.
NOTES:
According to a Georgia editor, “A snollygoster is a fellow who wants office, regardless of party, platform, or principles, and who, whenever he wins, gets there by the sheer force of monumental talknophical assumnacy.”
USAGE:
“Where do you find lawyers like this snollygoster?”
Malcolm Berko; Dunkin’ Donuts May Be Full of Holes; Herald Sun with Chapel Hill Herald (Durham, North Carolina); Jun 10, 2012.
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

In America, anybody can be president. That’s one of the risks you take. -Adlai Stevenson, statesman (5 Feb 1900-1965)

Bibble

Bibble. You know those people in your favorite restaurant who drink and/or eat noisily? What they are doing is referred to as bibble.

AND it is one of my biggest pet peeves.  I feel very strongly about eating a lot of food while at the same time doing it quietly.  I can now tell someone to please stop bibbling. So much nicer than shuuuuuttttttt upppppp!!

I am not alone in this eye-rolling activity.  Loud eating makes it to the top 10 of hundreds of top pet peeve lists.  Trust me on this.  I googled it and sure enough, to bibble ranks on nearly all top 10 lists as one of the biggest pet peeves for a very large portion of society. If google says it, it must be true.  It’s nice to not be alone.

“Good manners: The noise you don’t make when you’re eating soup.”
Bennett Cerf, humorist, publisher (1898-1971)

I hate mouth noises of all kinds – chewing, swallowing, gum smacking, heavy breathing. S.E. Cupp

“Mr. Jesmond made a peculiar noise rather like a hen who has decided to lay an egg and then thought better of it.”
Agatha Christie, ‘The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding’ (1925)

“….the noise from good toast should reverberate in the head like the thunder of July.”
E.V. Lucas, ‘When Toasters Disagree’ (1906)

Donnybrook

Donnybrook. This is a fun little word for an uprising, a melee, or a riot. It can also refer to an argument. If you search Google for this particular term, you will not only find the definition but also learn that it is a place called Donnybrook, which is part of Dublin, Ireland. Very interesting!

“We got no jobs, no money, no power, no nothin’, nothin’ to live for ‘cept vice and indulgence. That’s how they control us. But it’s falling apart. What we got is our land and our machines, our families and our ability to protect it all, to keep them alive. We got our hands. Ones who’ll survive will be the ones can live from the land. Can wield a gun. Those folks’ll fight for what little they’ve got. They’ll surprise the criminals with their own savagery. Man, woman, and child will be tested. Others’ll be too weak and scared. Uneducated in common sense. Won’t know what’s happened. But believe me, war is coming.”
― Frank Bill, Donnybrook

So to be Frank (I’m Sam), I have never really been part of an uprising, a melee or a riot.  The word does not scream violence and uprising at me.  Because of that I may have to start using it when I get myself into a little donnybrook with friends and family.  Makes it seem so much nicer.

“All your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more. But I am of the House of Éorl and not a serving-woman. I can ride and wield blade, and I do not fear either pain or death.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien

Even through I have never been involved in a donnybrook myself, many of my favorite times in Korea felt like I was part of it all.  So very much a part of it all.  Miss you guys!!
